Up

There is a two-letter word that may have more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP." 

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky, but . . . In the morning, why do we wake UP? 

When my son says "What's UP?" it's not really a question. He's just saying "Hi."

When you're talking to a friend, why does a topic come UP? 

Why do we speak UP and why are the candidates UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? 

We call UP our friends to see what they're UP to. 

We brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. 

We lock UP the house and some guy fixes UP my car. 

People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. 

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. 

And this UP is confusing: 

A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. 

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. 

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!

In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. 

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. 

It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. 

When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. 

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP. 

I could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP.

Run

Did you ever run across an old photo when you cleaned out your desk? 

Who will run against Donald Tusk for President? 

I hope that after the election you won’t want to run away from home! 

Are you tired, feeling run down? 

Maybe you worked too hard when your boss asked you to run down all those phone numbers. 

If you have a dog, I hope he stays out of the street. I wouldn’t want him to get run down by a bus. 

Some people are so negative. Every time they speak they have to run down someone else. 

It’s fun for me to visit Poland. I always run into some very interesting people. 

Before you run off, would you like to have a drink? 

With a fast copier, you can run off hundreds of copies in no time. If you make too many copies, you might run out of paper. 

And I’ve run out of time, so I have to run!

Over

When his girlfriend left him, he didn’t think he would ever get over it. 

My parents told me over and over to be careful when I drive. They were right. I got stopped by a policeman for driving over the speed limit. 

Do you enjoy having friends over for dinner? 

Why are you standing clear over there? Come closer so I can hear you over the noise of the traffic. 

When is football season over? 

He met her at a party and fell head over heels in love.

 Mama wasn’t pleased when her children scattered their toys all over the livingroom. 

She taught her dog to roll over. 

Financial advisors may tell you to wait a few years to roll over your account into an IRA. 

He’s not the kind of person who will just roll over when someone tells him to do something. 

In the US you can vote if you are age 18 or over. 

He looks like he could roll over and die.
