Over

When his girlfriend left him, he didn’t think he would ever get over it. 

My parents told me over and over to be careful when I drive. They were right. I got stopped by a policeman for driving over the speed limit. 

Do you enjoy having friends over for dinner? 

Why are you standing clear over there? Come closer so I can hear you over the noise of the traffic. 

When is football season over? 

He met her at a party and fell head over heels in love.

 Mama wasn’t pleased when her children scattered their toys all over the livingroom. 

She taught her dog to roll over. 

Financial advisors may tell you to wait a few years to roll over your account into an IRA. 

He’s not the kind of person who will just roll over when someone tells him to do something. 

In the US you can vote if you are age 18 or over. 

He looks like he could roll over and die.

Around

If someone is old, he's been around a long time. 

If you want to meet your friend for a drink, you can say, "See you at the pub around 7:00." 

If you're not sure exactly how much it costs, you can say "It's around 10 dollars." 

When you need help, it's good to have a friend around (near). 

You miss them if they don't come around for awhile. 

He got hit in the head and was unconscious for a few minutes. Then he opened his eyes and began to come around. 

My son didn't understand my rules when he was young. When he got older, he began to come around to my point of view. 

He was mean to his son. Now his son doesn't want to talk to him. What goes around comes around.

I talked with him about plans for next year. We went around and around for half an hour without making a decision. 

I had a problem returning the shirt I bought. The store clerk just gave me the run around. 

The world spins around and creates night and day. The world revolves around the sun. Some people think the world revolves around them!

Make

Did you ever have to make up your mind? That's an old song that was popular when I was young. 

Did you ever have to make do with a candle because your lights went out? 

Did you ever think you wouldn't make it to class on time because you overslept? 

Did anyone ever make off with your purse or your cell phone? 

Did someone treat you badly and then try to make it up to you by being nice? 

You can make a batch of cookies if you make up your mind what kind you like. (Be sure to send me some!) 

Some people's handwriting is so bad I can barely make out what they wrote. 

That's about all I can make out of this little word 'make'. So I guess I'll "make like a tree and leave."

Fall (a/k/a autumn)

Since it's that time of year--fall--I think I'll write some sentences with the word 'fall'. 

I'll hurry because I don't want to fall behind. It will be winter soon! Fall won't last forever.

Did you ever fall in love? 

Did you fall for that special person the first time you met? 

Well, if you have someone, I hope you never fall apart. 

You may fall out once in awhile. Don't fall for the lie that true love always makes you happy. Arguments are bound to happen. But if you're committed to each other, and you're careful to treat each other with respect, you can always fall back on the trust you build into your relationship. 

The stock market in the US is recovering. I hope it doesn't fall off again. Although I do wish the price of gas would fall off a little! 

So what do you think? Can you use this word 'fall' with confidence? If you practice, it will be as easy as falling off a log!

Break

I thought I would take a break from my other activities and give you some examples of sentences using 'break'. 

If you don't like your boyfriend/girlfriend any more, you can break off the relationship, usually called 'breaking up'. 

Be careful--you might break someone's heart (maybe your own!) or even have a break down and become very depressed. 

Some people break out in a rash (a very uncomfortable skin condition). 

It's very annoying when your car breaks down on the way to work. Your boss may be upset if you you're late. 

It's not good to break the rules. 

You might have sore feet when you break in a new pair of shoes. 

It's even more painful if someone breaks into your house and takes something valuable. 

If the thief is caught and put in jail, I hope he doesn't break out out of his cell! 

You can break with tradition and have something different this year for Christmas dinner. 

Of course, we have some slang expressions. When someone says something you don't believe, you can say, "Give me a break!" 

It's traditional to say to an actor who is going on stage, "Break a leg", which strangely enough means "Good luck". 

When we break bread, we're just eating a meal--even if we don't have bread! 

Well, I hope you enjoyed this little exercise. At least the price was right--you didn't have to break the bank to pay for it!

Out

We went out of town this weekend to help out my wife's parents. Her mother got out of the hospital on Saturday. We hope she doesn't run out of pain medicine. 

Since we were busy, we didn't have time to go out on the town. Don't worry, we didn't go out of our minds. 

Have you ever felt left out because everyone else got invited to the party while you stayed home? 

Did your best friend ever run out on you when you needed him most? 

When I look out my window today, will I see sunshine or rain? 

Look out! There's a car coming. We can't cross the street yet. 

How did you make out last week? I know you were very busy. 

Did he make out his will before he died? 

I think I'll take out a loan to buy a new car. 

I'm going out on a limb, but I think he's going to change his ways and stay out of trouble. 

You have to stay out of his way when he gets angry. He might punch you out! 

I see that I'm out of time, so I'm outta here!

Go, going, gone!

Every day, Monday through Friday, I go to work. If you ask me, "Where are you going in your career?", I don't really know. I hope I'm not just going through the motions, but I haven't found anything at the insurance company that I really want to go after. 

Maybe you've noticed that some people are a little sensitive. You have to be careful what you say to them, because they might get angry and go off on you. Then where would you go? You might go crazy if you don't go away! 

It's hard to keep up with the latest language for dating. When I was young, we said we were 'going steady'. I've heard my daughter say they were 'going out' even when they were too young to go anywhere without their parents. That's how it goes. 

That's all I have to give on 'go'. I must be going. I'm gone!
